英文慣用語10句第七集(English Idioms Episode 7)

    慣用語往往短小精悍,富於哲理,具有較高的概括性和表達性,眾多學者、語言學家和文字工作者對其推崇備至。慣用語無處不在,其形式和意義的約定俗成和文字的風趣幽默大大增強了語言的生命力和表現力。

1. butter up拍馬屁/stuck up臭屁

To butter someone upis to be really nice to him so that you can ask him for something. or flatter with the intention of getting something to.

butter up 就是為了得到好處而拍人馬屁。

flatter也是奉承的意思。

butter up的例句:

1. She was really nice to me one day. She offered to help me with my homework and everything. It turns out , she was just buttering me up so that she could ask me to help her move to a new apartment.

   她有一天對我非常好。她幫忙我的家庭作業以及任何事,結果是她對我好只是想讓你幫忙搬家!

2. I guess, but what bothers me is that she ignored me until she needed my help with something. She was only nice to me when she was buttering me up to ask for help.

   原來如此.她過去從來不理你,到了要你幫忙的時候才來拍馬屁.那她也真是太會利用人了。

3. Are you trying to butter me up for something?
4. I needed to butter you up to get some of your chocolates.

5. Don't bother buttering up to me. I'm too old a hand to be won over by flattery.

不必勞駕來拍我馬屁。我可是個老資格,才不吃那一套哩。

6. wish you'd stop trying to butter me up.我希望你不要再恭維我了。

7. He tried hard to butter up the Mayor他拼命拍市長馬屁。

8. He is two-faced subordinate and knows how to butter up the president!

1. butter up拍馬屁。

stuck up高傲的,自大的,神氣活現的。conceited自負

stuckstick的過去式,不過 stickup =搶劫;stuck-up =自大(full of oneself, huge ago),自命不凡。

1. Listen carefully This is a stickup Put all your money inside these bags before I kill you.

聽清楚!這是搶劫!在我未殺掉你們之前,立即將所有錢放進袋裡去。

stuck up的例句:

1. Tell your stuck-up nanny miss Hawthorne I apologize to her too.

   告訴你那神氣活現的奶媽,霍索恩小姐,我向她道歉

2. Week by week her list grew: I was skinny; I wasn't a good student; I was a tomboy; I talked too loud; I was stuck-up and so on.

   時間越久,她挑的毛病就越多:我瘦得皮包骨啦,不是個好學生啦,是個假小子啦,我說話聲音太大啦,自高自大啦,等等。

3. I don't like no stuck-up people like this.

   我不喜歡人表現的這樣神氣活現的

4. The new girl at school seems stuck-up but I think she is just a little shy.

2. If it’s not one thing, it’s another

一波未平一波又起!or 禍不單行!

When many different things are going wrong in a short period of time people sometimes say "If it's not one thing, it's another!" This is to say that if "one thing" is not causing a problem, "another" is.

當在短時間內許多事情紛紛出錯、狀況頻頻時,我們可以說If it's not one thing, it's another.,意思是如果這件事(one thing)沒有出錯造成問題,另一件事(another)也會有狀況發生,表示「狀況百出,錯誤連連」,令人措手不及,類似中文所說的一波未平一波又起。

If it's not one thing, it's another" can also mean that you are busy with too many things to do.

If it's not one thing, it's another可以用在一時間有太多事情要做。

I've got to wash the dishes and do the laundry, and now I hear the baby crying! If it's not one thing, it's another

When it seems that no matter where you look there is one more thing you need to do or you discover another problem, you might say "If it's not one thing, it's another!"

If it's not one thing, it's another.的例句:

1. First the car broke; now there's no gas. If it's not one thing, it's another!
   先是車子壞了,現在汽油也沒了。真是一波未平一波又起!

2. First the car broke down, and now I can't find my keys! If it's not one thing, it's another

3. I've had a date planned for the last week, but every day it has rained, if it's not one thing, it's another.

3. over the top 太棒了、太過分了。

Over the top or OTT.就是說什麼東西太棒了,要不就是太過分了.超乎尋常!

Over the top的例句:

1. Of course, the students need to be disciplined, but what their teacher did was over the top. You cannot make thirteen year olds line up all afternoon in the hot sun. That's what they do to prisoners of war.
   當然有必要管教他們,但是他們的老師做得也太過份了。你不能讓13歲的孩子整個下午都列隊站在那麼熱的太陽底下。 這是對待戰俘的做法。

2. I wish you could have seen this hotel! The lobby's the size of a football field. I'm not joking. And the rooms...I think the bedposts were made of gold.And the food at the buffet. Oh my god. I've never seen so much food. It was really over the top.

   影片結尾的暴力場面太過分了。

4. elite精英、優秀分子=cream of the crop一群中的精華。

cream of the crop相反詞是 bottom rung 底層、最差的。

Those living in poverty are at the bottom rung of the society.

貧困的人生活在社會的最底層。

Elite cream of the crop的例句:

1. The President convened the elite of the nation's scholars for a meeting.

   總統召集了全國最優秀的學者們來開會。

2. The intellectual elite of a society. 知識分子是社會中的精英。

3. A member of a group of elite , highly loyal supporters.

禁衛軍一支精銳的皇家軍隊中的成員。

4. The football team's elite. 足球隊的主力。

5. These astronomers are the nation's cream of the crop.

   這些天文學家是國內的精英。

5. zippy精神飽滿的、敏捷的、活潑的=chipper爽朗的;活潑的; 精神飽滿的。

Having a cheerful, lively, and self-confident air.

相反字是poopedvery tired; exhausted 很累;筋疲力竭的。

1. You're looking particularly chipper today!

   你今天看起來倒是挺精神飽滿的嘛!

2. Her chipper sound bobbish melody and jocose lyric her innocent manner while she hugging her child and playing with her child like playing a seesaw mixed with the creaky laugh of her child together poppled in this small adobe.

   她爽朗的聲音,快活的曲調,詼諧的歌詞,摟著孩子像玩翹翹板似的搖上搖下的天真的神態,和孩子嘰嘰嘎嘎的笑聲溶在一起,在這小土房裡蕩漾。

3. But the crop does not contain many blue chippers. 但是這群人當中沒有多少出類拔萃的人。

blue chipper出類拔萃的人。

4. The band played a zippy number for the parade.

   樂隊為遊行演奏了一首輕快的曲子。

5. a zippy little car飛快的小汽車。

4. I pooped a tape recorder. 我厭倦了聽答錄機

5. I was pooped after the long walk. 長途跋涉後我感到筋疲力盡。

2. Pompom
我五歲,最喜歡毛絨絨的東西,所以我有許多娃娃,但最喜歡的還是小熊貓(Panda),雖然我不像其他好朋友一樣那麼會飛、會跳、會跑、會游泳,但我都會努力試試看,我也喜歡畫畫,因為我最喜歡美麗的圖畫了。

4. Elvis

我是Clem爺爺最得意的發明。只要聽到"Please"這個神奇的字,就會按照指示有所反應,我會說許多不同的語言以便和人溝通,當然也包括中文及美語囉!
Zap, a cute little robot, is Clem’s best invention. Clem has programmed Zap to respond to all sorts of commands, but before Zap will perform, he must first hear the magic “please”. Clem has also programmed Zap to speak many languages, among them Chinese and English.

He’s also a teacher and mentor for the kids of the neighborhood. Warm, friendly, and outgoing, Clem loves kids and they love him. A very cheerful sort, he hums, sings, whistles, or mutters to himself as he works. he often peers though his spectacles, which he sometimes has to adjust to see better. He’s spry and lively, able to kick up his feet to the beat of the music.

11. Max
我很會爬高爬低,從不知「懼高症」是什麼感覺,也喜歡玩捉迷藏及捉弄Axel,每一次捉弄我的朋友之後,都會馬上躲在樹叢中,或是掛在樹上像盪鞦韆一樣,我的笑聲很響亮,和我一起玩您一定會很快樂的。
Max is a mischievous young monkey with a big smile, an infectious laugh, and a twinkle in his eye. He loves to play tricks, and Axel is his favorite victim. He especially likes to hide and then spring out from his hiding place. Nimble and agile, he excels at climbing, dancing, wiggling, and swinging from high places. He’s a star on the jungle gym. Although he has many monkey-like attributes, he walks, runs, skips, and, of course, talks like a human.

12. Axel
我八歲,我看起來很兇,其實我是很善良的,而且我也想和所有的小朋友做朋友,雖然有時候很頑皮,會破壞大家在遊戲中的歡樂氣氛,但我只是想引起別人的注意而已;對我來說,怎麼和別人做朋友是最困難的,Clem爺爺有時候會幫我說話,其實我真的不是個小霸王喔!

6. pick upto get well康復

to get well反義詞是fall ill意思是生病。

1) You better get well before we head for the country.

   你最好能趕快在我們去鄉下前康復!

2) He picked up in no time at all after the surgery.

   他在手術後一下子就康復了。

3) Mary has fallen ill after the weekend getaway.

   瑪莉在從週末假期回來後就生病了!

茲舉數例,說明 pick up的用法:
1. The children
picked up many sea shells at the seashore.
  
一些小孩在海邊拾到不少貝殼。
2. That lovely old vase was a real bargain! Where did you
pick it up?
  
這個漂亮花瓶真是便宜!你在哪裏買到的?

10. pick up to tidy a room 整理、收拾

我們希望他很快康復,回來上班。

Buck is seriously ill, and there is little hope for him to get well.

   我們都希望他母親很快康復。

2. I guarantee that if you take this medicine, you'll soon get well.

   他們在公開場合相處融恰, 但他們的性情真正合得來的。

7. Judging the book by its cover.不可以貌取人,人不可貌相。

1. you can't judge a book by its cover; you can't judge a person by appearance.人不可貌相,海水不可斗量

A: Why don't you want to go out with him?

A: You shouldn't judge a tree by its bark.

8. get up on the wrong side of the bed
壞脾氣,心情不好(bad temper or feel grouchy)。
在古羅馬時代,有人迷信,認為任何東西的左邊都是不吉利的,他們甚至認為起床時,如果左腳先著地,也會有厄運。這個迷信的 left side 後來又演變成 wrong side
1. We'd better be careful! Our boss got up on the wrong side of the bed today.
  
我們要小心!老闆今天心情不好!
2. He had a long face today; he must have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed.
  
他今天一副臭臉,一定是情緒不好。

   他臉臭臭的,因為情緒不佳。

get up on the wrong side of the bed是指下床氣仍未消,也就是情緒不佳。亦作get out of the wrong side of the bed

   你到底怎麼回事?你心情不佳嗎?

A: Why are you getting mad at me? Did I do anything wrong?

   你幹嘛對我發脾氣啊?我做錯了什麼嗎?

   湯姆斯,你今天實在暴躁 你今天早上一起床就心情不好嗎?

·       8. rock the boat
這是指破壞現狀或製造麻煩(someone who upsets a situation or makes trouble)
當人們在小船上,風平浪靜時,突然有人猛然搖動(rock),那麼這小船也許會翻覆或沉沒(capsize or sink)。
1. We hope our new boss will not rock the boat.
   我們盼望新來老闆不要破壞現狀。
2. Some young people seem to enjoy rocking the boat whenever they can.
   一些年輕人似乎只要可能就喜歡製造麻煩或搗亂。
3. What it needs is cheap labor and factories, and no one to rock the boat.

   它所需要的是廉價勞動力和工廠,並且沒有人來搗亂。

4. Sometimes you have to rock the boat, if you want to experience still waters.

   如果你想體驗一下平靜的水,有時候你必須搗搗亂。

9. kick the bucket
意思是死亡了(to die or to pass away)。
這句流行的慣用語,據說在十七世紀就已在英國使用。因為當時處死犯人時,要站在桶子(bucket)上,再把絞索(noose)套在脖子上,然後踢掉桶子,絞索就會拉緊而吊死。

1. If he does not take care of himself, he may kick the bucket sooner or later.
   假如他自己不多保重身體,遲早會翹辮子。
2. Eventually, all of us will kick the bucket.
